App Review: Factbook

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean learning has to stop! Download the free Factbook from the Market and learn more about countries around the world in your down time or settle family bets without leaving the dinner table!

Information is taken from the CIA World Fact Book and United Nations Data. This app just compiles the information in an easy to read format for Android.

To view information, you’re given 3 choices – search by country, region or rankings. I like searching by country. The countries are listed in alphabetical order with a nice sized search box at the top to make it easier to find the country you want. A dial will appear on the screen when you click on a country. Options include General Information, Population, Government and Geography. You press on the middle button of the dial to select the subject you want. And the information loads in landscape mode.

Even more helpful is the option to compare to other countries and a link to Wikipedia (which loads in an internal browser then you can share from there via email).

This app is pretty straightforward and uncomplicated; my wishlist would include being able to bookmark or share data directly from the app other than emailing Wikipedia articles. If you’re looking for a nerdy way to spend some time, Factbook is for you!
